10 Common Mistakes in Website Designing that You Should Avoid

Website Designing is a skillful and creative task. Quite often, people commit mistakes in it. These days when almost every successful business has a website and people have become so much used to, of visiting websites that they can easily make out the difference between a good and poor website design. If the users get poor experience visiting a website, probability is very less that they would land back to the site ever again. So, as a designer you must know the following ten mistakes that you should avoid so that visitors keep coming to your site.

  1. Bad and Unprofessional Website Design: The website design should be made keeping in mind the potential users of the site. It should be neat, clean, balanced and should not be overloaded with non text items like images and flashes. In case, you want to have some prior feedback of your layout before you actually implement it. You may call for usability testing or go to some forums with your work sample and ask people to come with constructive comments.
  2. No Fixed and Readable Font: The font chosen should be easily perceived by the readers. It should not be too small or too large or very complex to read. If you use CSS, it disables the web browser for any kind of resizing of the text. Respect the user’s preferences and resize the text to the extent of easy readability. The font should be kept the same throughout.
  3. Slow Loading of Web pages: Patience is something which everybody lacks. If your website is taking  unnecessary time to load, then this matter is of serious concern. You need to do something about this without any delay. This might be due to the over use of the design elements. Using too many images/flash in the web page slow down the loading time. You need to optimize the images so as to avoid the loading issue.
  4. Untested Website: You have to test the website on multiple browsers to check its compatibility. Also if you do not do usability testing, you might not be able to know how your users going to react about your website. With this testing, you can have an experience beforehand about how your users are going to proceed with your website. After comprehending with the website, they would be able to give comments, identify areas of improvements, check errors and bugs if any.
  5. Missing Meta Tags: If you have not optimized your website with proper relevant keywords/phrases, then people would not be able to find you on different search engines. You have to search out for relevant keywords/phrases and include them with in your title, description or the website content.
  6. No Fresh Information/Content: If your website is not refreshed with fresh and original content on regular basis, and you are carrying same old and outdated information then trust me you are doing the biggest blunder. Visitors always search for fresh and useful information. If you are not catering to their requirements, they will not land on your website.
  7. No PSD to HTML Conversion: If your web designs are not perfectly coded, then your website is lacking a big thing. PSD to HTML is  a very important part of website development. It enhances the clarity, increases the visibility and enhances the search engine friendliness of the website.
  8. Poor Navigation: A good website is always that where the visitors find everything just so easy to explore. If your users find broken links, error pages or confuse themselves in the midst of so many images/flash, overloaded content, then they surely would get annoyed with all these and probably would never come back again on your website. You need to check for broken links and fix errors regularly. Keep your navigation simple and easy.
  9. Complex and Confusing URL Structures: Keep your URL simple and relevant keyword based. It will not only help to  improve your search rankings but make it easy for the readers to identify your website.
  10. Mixing  Advertising with the Content: Blending your advertising links with the content may increase the clicks but it may annoy readers. An annoyed visitor is a lost visitor. So donot overmarket your products/offerings in between your content.
